Late Paleozoic basic magmatism from SW Yangtze Massif and evolution of the Paleo- Tethyan Ocean

The basic magmatic rocks from late Devonian to late Permian in southwest of Yangtze Massif are found to have similar geochemical characteristics, with high in Ti (TiO 22%), LILE, LREE (La N/Yb N=4 8~14 6), Ti/V (32~67), Ti/Y (400~693), and Zr/Y (3 2~7 6), which are similar to those of oceanic island basalt (OIB), and are considered to be products of magma activity from mantle plume. The plume existed about the same time with the Paleotethyan ocean. The initial volcanic center of plume magmatism was far from the initial spreading center of Paleotethyan ocean, and thus the openning of Jinshajiang Ailaoshan ocean basin has no relation with the plume activity. From late Devonian to late Permian, the scale and intensity of the plume magmatism increased continuously, and the plume related volcanic center between Nanning and Baise moved northwestwards (≈310°) for about 600 km. We interpret that this track is due to the spreading of Jinshajiang Ailaoshan ocean basin, which had reached more than 1000 km in width at least. It is inferred from the interangle between the plume magmatism track and the Jinshajiang Ailaoshan suture zone that the Yangtze Massif has undergone clockwise rotation, identical to the paleomagnetic data.
